The truth about oxidation in pet food

The truth about oxidation in pet food

When it comes to pet health, fats - especially omega-3-rich oils - play a powerful role.

They support brain development, skin and coat health, joint mobility, and reduce inflammation.

Healthy fats do even more. They’re critical for:

  • Cell membrane health and repair
  • Neurological development and brain function
  • Hormone production
  • Immune modulation
  • Healthy joints and skin

That's why so many diets include oils or capsules - but are you feeding the right ones?

Lets look at closer at Omega 3 supplementation since Omega 3 is a nutrient that often lacks in the diet.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding Omega 3 or other oil supplements is oxidation. When oils are exposed to heat, light, or oxygen, they begin to break down. This process creates lipid peroxides, harmful compounds that can damage cells, strain the liver, and trigger systemic inflammation.

Oxidized oils are no longer nourishing. They are pro-inflammatory, harder to digest, and can contribute to chronic health issues.

Sadly, oxidized fats are everywhere in the commercial pet world. Most kibble and shelf-stable treats are cooked at high temperatures and stored for years, oxidizing as they are waiting to be eaten.
Many omega-3 supplements, particularly fish oils are highly refined, deodorized, and preserved with synthetic antioxidants like BHA or BHT (apart from questionable sourcing of these oils).

The result? A product that looks clean on the label but is nutritionally depleted and chemically masked to cover up its rancidity.

We might not notice. But our pet's body does.

Canine India’s answer: Oils done right

At Canine India, we believe in doing things differently. Our Salmon and Emu oils are a perfect example of how a holistic, small-batch, and integrity-driven approach protects the delicate balance of omega-rich fats.

How we make a difference:

Norwegian Salmon Oil

  • Our oil is gently extracted in-house from flash-frozen Norwegian salmon. We process it in small batches, minimizing exposure to air and light.
  • Unlike commercial oils, we don’t bleach, deodorize, or refine our salmon (or emu) oil. That means it retains its natural omega-3 structure, aroma, and full-spectrum nutrient profile.
  • Salmon is rich in antioxidants - vitamins that naturally protect against oxidization. This helps preserve the oil without the need for synthetic preservatives.
  • If our oil ever goes off, you’ll know. There’s nothing to mask the smell.

Emu Oil

  • Emu oil contains a balanced blend of Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, including oleic acid, linoleic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), making it uniquely suited for skin healing, joint support, and nervous system health.
  • While rich in beneficial omega fats, emu oil has a naturally low polyunsaturated fat content compared to fish oil - making it more shelf-stable and less prone to oxidation
  • Emu oil is transdermal and highly bioavailable meaning it is easily absorbed and quickly utilized by the body, both topically and internally.
  • The oil is extracted without harsh solvents or high heat preserving its integrity and healing properties along with vitamin e that supports shelf life and protects from rancidity

That also makes our oils so long lasting - just a few drops will do magic!
